A video showing a giant fireball turning night into day in China has gone viral on social media.
The phenomenon occurred last Wednesday (28) and was recorded from the city of Maoming, in Guangdong Province, southern China, around 9:30 PM local time.
The fireball passed by and lit up the night sky as if night had turned into day. Local residents reported that after the flash, a loud boom was heard, startling everyone.
Gou Lijun, an astronomer at the National Astronomical Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said the phenomenon that lit up Maoming’s night sky was a fireball, according to China News Service.
He explained to the media that this type of phenomenon can be observed when cosmic dust, small particles, or smaller asteroids enter the Earth’s atmosphere, causing friction that sets these bodies on fire.
An official from Maoming’s emergency management department told the Global Times on Thursday (29) that, based on evaluations, the fireball was probably a bolide. Additionally, no accidents or injuries were reported.
